India Bans Over 200 Chinese Apps Over Data Privacy Concerns, Threatening Behaviors

The Indian government has acted quickly against Chinese loan and betting apps. After examining 288 Chinese apps, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology banned 230 of them due to the access they had to personal data of Indian citizens. This decision was based on recommendations from the Ministry of Home Affairs. This was prompted by reports of harassment and extortion of people who took out loans from these apps. Some debtors faced interest rate increases of 3,000% annually and were subjected to threatening messages and the release of altered photos. This led to several suicides in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Various states and intelligence agencies called for action against these apps. 94 of the banned apps were found on app stores and others were being spread through third-party links. The government has also issued a warning that betting and gambling are illegal in most parts of India and advertisements for these platforms are against the Consumer protection Act and Cable TV Network Regulation Act of 2019 and 1995 respectively , 2021 The IT Rules.
